Surprisingly “The Pink Star” was not mined from Argyle Mine in Australia which is famous for pink gemstones. It was mined in South Africa by by the De Beers Company in 1999.
Price of Pink Star Diamond
The Pink Star Diamond holds the record of world’s most expensive diamond or gemstone ever sold. It was sold in April, 2017 at auction in Hong Kong for a world recording breaking $71.2 Million USD. It just took 5 minutes of intense bidding and was sold in much more high price than its expected worth of $60 millions USD. Chinese jewelry behemoth Chow Tai Fook purchased it just minutes after the hammer went down. Previously this record was held by “Blue Moon Diamond” which was sold for $48.5 million at a Geneva auction. The Blue Moon diamond is still most expensive diamond in terms of highest per carat price.
Pink Star’s Highest Bid
Most of people are unaware of the fact that Hong Kong Auction isn’t the first place where Pink Star Diamond was placed for Auction. Previously, it was it was also presented in Geneva Auction In 2013 where Sotheby’s sold the Pink Star to a New York-based diamond cutter, Isaac Wolf. Wolf bid an incredible amount of $83 million for the Pink Star, which is even more than its current price. Unfortunately, Wolf was not able to raise enough money to complete this sale because his investors pulled out necessary funds to pay the $83 million. After this, the gemstone was not offered to the second highest bidder but instead it was returned to Sotheby’s inventory where it has stayed for couple of years.
